The old boards creak on the pier.
Barnacles hug each dark, wooden support.
The bar-tops are stained with mustard and beer.
Burnt-out seadogs on the railings watch the children cavort.

 

You hang around until there is no enemy,
and the salty wind blows off the endless sea.

 

He walks the beach in the wrong shoes.
He tries to count the gulls, but they refuse.
And the full waves billow and fall.
